By Emma Thompson / Dec 21, 2024

As the holiday season approaches and shoppers are busy searching for the ideal gift, a hidden gem may be found in the form of a lottery ticket. Tonight's Mega Millions drawing presents an opportunity to win a staggering jackpot, nearing the $1 billion mark—the largest prize ever offered in December. The winning numbers for Friday's draw were: 2, 20, 51, 56, 67, with the Mega Ball being 19. The Mega Millions jackpot has soared to an impressive $862 million, as reported by Joshua Johnston, the lead director of the Mega Millions Consortium. This figure represents a $37 million increase from the initially projected $825 million jackpot. Should a fortunate individual claim the prize on Friday, they would have the option to receive a lump sum of $392.1 million. Johnston expressed his excitement, saying, "I would love to be the family members of the person that won that – your Christmas is going to be amazing!" He continued, "There’s just really not a product on the market for two bucks that will give you an opportunity throughout the course of a few days to just kind of imagine and dream what it would be like to win that sum of money." He added, "And that’s just so much fun to think about, especially around the holidays, when there’s already a sense of magic in the air."

JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo Face Zelle Fraud Lawsuit

By Joshua Howard / Dec 21, 2024

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has lodged a legal complaint against three major U.S. banks and the operator of Zelle, the country's most prevalent peer-to-peer payment platform, accusing them of enabling fraudulent activities to thrive within their network. The CFPB claims that this negligence has led to substantial financial losses for hundreds of thousands of customers of JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo, amounting to over $870 million since Zelle's inception seven years ago. Zelle, however, disputes these figures. The banks named in the lawsuit, along with four other significant U.S. banks—Capital One, PNC Bank, Truist, and US Bank—jointly own Zelle. CFPB Director Rohit Chopra stated in a press release, "The largest banks in the nation, feeling the pressure from competing payment applications, hastily introduced Zelle. Their failure to implement adequate security measures turned Zelle into a haven for fraudsters, often leaving victims to deal with the consequences on their own." The CFPB has highlighted that customers who reported fraud were largely denied support, with some even being advised to reach out to the fraudsters directly to recover their funds. Furthermore, the CFPB asserts that the entities being sued did not conduct proper investigations into the complaints or provide consumers with the legally mandated reimbursements for fraud and errors.

Thousands of Amazon Drivers Strike Amid Holiday Package Rush

By Amanda Phillips / Dec 21, 2024

As the holiday season draws near, a labor dispute has emerged that could potentially impact Amazon's delivery operations. In a move that has caught the attention of many, drivers affiliated with the Teamsters union have initiated a strike across several facilities in four different states, just days before the Christmas rush. Despite the union's claim to represent a significant number of Amazon's workforce, the actual percentage is less than 1% of the company's total U.S. employees. The dispute extends beyond the typical concerns of wages and benefits, with Amazon contesting the very status of these workers as its own employees, despite their Amazon-branded attire and the exclusive delivery of Amazon packages.

Trump Warns Europe: Increase Purchase of US Oil and Gas or Risk Tariffs

By Laura Wilson / Dec 21, 2024

President-elect Donald Trump has intensified his stance on tariffs, vowing to escalate duties on European Union (EU) nations unless they commit to increasing their imports of American oil and gas, thereby reducing the trade imbalance with the United States. In a statement on Truth Social, a platform owned by his media company, Trump declared, "I have made it clear to the European Union that they must address their substantial trade deficit with the United States by significantly purchasing our oil and gas. Failure to do so will result in the imposition of tariffs!" Trump has persistently wielded the threat of tariffs as a bargaining chip in negotiations with countries he perceives as engaging in unfair trade practices against the U.S. In November, he threatened to impose a substantial 25% tariff on all imports from Canada and Mexico unless these nations strengthened their drug and border control measures, which he deemed inadequate.

The US Housing Market Has Struggled: What Could Revive It?

By Jessica Lee / Dec 21, 2024

The U.S. housing market is concluding a year marked by soaring prices, sluggish sales, and elevated mortgage rates. However, there are several factors that could potentially invigorate the market in the coming year. The Federal Reserve initiated a series of interest rate reductions in September, yet mortgage rates have paradoxically increased since that time. According to Freddie Mac, the average rate for a standard 30-year fixed mortgage climbed to 6.72% this week, up from 6.6% the previous week. Analysts predict that mortgage rates are likely to remain above the 6% threshold for the next two years.

Cryptocurrency Can Enter Mainstream Society—if It Overcomes Its Own Hurdles

By William Miller / Dec 21, 2024

Ever since the polls closed, the cryptocurrency community has been reveling in a festive spirit akin to Christmas Day. For years, they have lamented the unfair restrictions imposed by unsympathetic regulators who seemed to misunderstand the digital asset landscape. Now, they anticipate an American leader who not only endorses their digital currencies but also appoints advocates to positions once held by skeptics. The influx of mainstream capital is palpable, with the prospect of a US bitcoin reserve now within reach. Cryptocurrency appears to have few obstacles in its path—except perhaps the industry's own tendencies. "Historically, we've had a penchant for self-sabotage," remarks Matthew Homer, a former financial regulator turned general partner at Department of XYZ, a crypto-focused venture capital firm. "There's a concern that we might become too exuberant, leading to a sudden and severe downturn."

Apple Pushed to Remove AI Feature for Misrepresenting News Summaries

By Benjamin Evans / Dec 21, 2024

Press freedom advocate Reporters Without Borders has called on Apple to withdraw its AI-powered news summary feature following a significant error in headline generation. The incident occurred when Apple's AI system, which condenses news stories, incorrectly summarized a BBC report, falsely claiming that Luigi Mangione, the individual implicated in the murder of UnitedHealthcare's CEO, had taken his own life. This misinformation was disseminated to users via a push notification. The BBC has reached out to Apple to address the issue, but there has been no confirmation of a response from the tech giant. Vincent Berthier, the head of Reporters Without Borders' technology and journalism division, has urged Apple to "act responsibly by removing this feature," emphasizing that "AI systems are based on probabilities, and the truth should not be subject to chance." He further stated, "The automated dissemination of false information under the guise of a media outlet undermines its credibility and jeopardizes the public's access to accurate and reliable current affairs information."
